Ruto Addresses SHIF cancellation Amid Adani controversy
President William Ruto has responded to the ongoing debate about the cancellation of the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), which is linked to the Adani Group. Speaking during a church service in Kericho, Ruto dismissed concerns raised by Kenyans, stating that such criticism is part of the democratic process and will only strengthen his commitment to development.
According to a Livestream on his official Facebook account, the president likened public outcry to the choir’s singing in church, emphasizing that just like the sound of the choir, the criticism is normal and does not derail his administration’s progress. He further stated that if he had taken an easier path, there would be no meaningful development in the country.
Ruto highlighted that despite the challenges, his government is tackling issues such as NHIF debt. He pointed out that the government has already paid Ksh 5 billion to settle NHIF arrears and will pay an additional Ksh 3 billion in the coming week. The president reassured Kenyans that the Taifa Care scheme will also be addressed in full, and no pending debts to hospitals will remain. He expressed confusion over why the public is worried, urging them to have confidence in his administration’s efforts.
The controversy over SHIF’s association with Adani surfaced after the cancellation of a major deal with the Adani Group. In his address, Ruto made it clear that this action is final, despite the public outcry surrounding the issue. His comments came at a time when political figures are under scrutiny for their involvement in church donations, with public figures like President Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja facing backlash for contributions that were deemed a violation of fundraising regulations.
The cancellation of the SHIF deal and the subsequent controversy reflect the ongoing tensions within the political landscape. Ruto’s comments suggest he is focused on addressing pressing national issues, regardless of the challenges and criticisms that may arise.
This situation continues to unfold, with more details expected to emerge in the coming days. The president’s stance highlights his commitment to moving forward with his development agenda, despite public backlash over controversial decisions.
