President William Ruto has appointed General Charles Muriu Kahariri as the new Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Republic of Kenya.
Kahariri, previously serving at the rank of Lieutenant General, has been promoted to the esteemed rank of General, stepping into the role left vacant by the untimely demise of General Francis Ogolla in an aircraft accident last month.
The official announcement was made through a statement released by His Excellency Hon Dr William Samoei Ruto, C.G.H, President of the Republic of Kenya, and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces. The appointment of General Kahariri to the pivotal position of CDF is in accordance with section 9 (2) (a) of the Kenya Defence Forces Act.
Alongside the appointment of General Kahariri, President Ruto has also promoted Major General John Mugaravai Omenda to the rank of Lieutenant General and named him as the Vice Chief of the Defence Forces.
Prior to this elevation, Lieutenant General Omenda served as the distinguished Kenya Air Force Commander.
In further adjustments within the military leadership, Major General Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed has been assigned to the Kenya Air Force as its Commander, following her appointment by the President. Simultaneously, Major General Paul Owuor Otieno has been assigned to lead the Kenya Navy, assuming the role of Commander.
The reshuffle within the top echelons of the Kenyan Defence Forces underscores President Ruto’s commitment to ensuring continuity and efficiency within the military command structure. With these appointments, the President aims to maintain the operational readiness and effectiveness of the armed forces in safeguarding the nation’s security interests.
General Kahariri’s tenure as the new Chief of Defence Forces is expected to be marked by his leadership, experience, and dedication to serving the nation, as he assumes the mantle of responsibility in guiding Kenya’s defence strategies and operations.
