Bodaboda Riders Banned From Operating Past 10Pm
Police commander says resolution aimed at taming run-away crime in the area
Boda boda operators in Lumakanda and the neighbouring trading centres will be operating up to 10 pm, Lugari subcounty security committee has resolved.
Speaking in Lumakanda, subcounty police commander Bernard Ngungu said the resolution is aimed at taming the run-away crime witnessed in the area recently.
“From now on we do not want to see boda boda riders in any of our market centres after 10 pm. Beyond 10 pm who are you waiting in the market to transport? he posed.
“In fact, most of the motorbikes violate traffic regulations as they lack the basic documents and are not insured.”
He defended the ban saying it is not aimed at victimising the riders, but rather dealing with criminal elements masquerading as boda boda operators at night, with the sole objective of breaking into business premises.
He said operators who violate the directive will be arrested and charged in a court of law.
Ngungu also warned some boda boda operators engaged in the transportation of illicit brew and bhang that their days are numbered.
He said once arrested and the motorcycle is impounded they will be taken to court with a letter seeking the motorcycle to be forfeited to the government attached to the charge sheet.
