Michael Olunga Scores Four Times to Help His Team Win Top-Flight League Title in Qatar

  • Michael Olunga scored four times to help his side win the Qatar Super League
  • Olunga also successfully retained his Golden Boot, finishing the season with 22 goals
  • It is Olunga’s first-ever league title in Qatar, having joined Al Duhail in 2021

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga is finally a league champion in Qatar!

Olunga helped his Al Duhail side to the 2022/2023 league title by scoring four times on the final day against Shamal on May 8.

Heading into the last day of the campaign, Al Duhail needed a win to secure the title or a draw and other results going their way to win an eighth title. They won 5-2.

They declared their intentions early at their Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium home turf by rushing to a 4-0 lead within 35 minutes. Ali Almoez opened the scoring after seven minutes before Olunga took over to complete a first-half hat trick in the 21st, 31st and 35th minute.

Shamal pulled one back after the break via the penalty spot, but any faint hopes of a surprise comeback were dampened by Olunga’s fourth goal.

Also at stake was the Golden Boot as the Kenyan star looked to defend the award he won last year. Before the final games, he had scored 18 goals same as Al Arabi’s Al Somah. His four goals pulled him clear of his closest challenger.

The 29-year-old has been nominated for player of the season and after missing out to Akram Afif last year, he is on course to being declared the best player in Qatar after winning the league.

Michael Olunga put Kenya ahead, but the hosts fought their way back with two late goals. It was Kenya’s first game since the ban imposed by FIFA in 2021 was lifted last year.

Iran showed their pedigree by settling into the game quickly, with a huge crowd at the Azadi Stadium backing the team.

Playing against a team ranked number 24 in the world, Engin Firat’s team went toe to toe with Iran in the first half with a resolute defensive performance at the back.
